Frederik Takkenberg: Artist Statement

Painting answers in the face of an icon, especially the Madonna, lays me bare to fall short of my goal. The tiniest variation in line can influence the final effect the portrait of this archetype can have on the viewer. Roman, Islamic and Christian tradition in Spain, have shaped the message the Virgin Mary projects in all spheres of life. It is a manifestation of the feminine, the mother goddess, mother earth, mother sky, vessel of truth, guarantor of purity, peace and transparency. Sister, daughter, one face and all faces.

A challenging and timeless subject.
